Must have....

Merrell Mens Sawtooth Boot Walnut

Merrell Mens Sawtooth Boot Walnut

Ok, i have always leaned towards the minimalist side. Recently getting into running, I always sacrifice support and comfort to get the lowest profile/lightest shoe possible. So when I hiked, I had always been using a trail running shoes to backpack with. Recently though, I have been taking some longer trips where my pack weighs in excess of 60 lbs. The trail running shoes were not cutting it, and hiking through treacherous terrain my feet and ankles were taking a beating. Furthermore, the last hike I almost rolled my ankle more than once stepping on some rock cropping in the trail. I have owned many work boots and casual boots in my life time, but this is the first hiking boot I have ever purchased just for that.

I made the purchase because of the many positive reviews, especially from our men and women in uniform in the mountains of Afghanistan. They have met and exceeded my expectations. I will best describe them as a 360 fit. One in which you feel you have support at every point the boot touches, which is important if you are hiking through mountains like I recently did. I put 119 miles on them in five days. I am very happy with the good grip, solid fit, kept my ankle from rolling when stepping on awkward and uneven trail surfaces. Those times when you feel yourself going the wrong direction because the weight of your pack. My hike was through the ouchita Mountains in Eastern OK and Western Arkansas. The first 60 miles of trail, there area a lot of 300 ft to 2300 ft climbs, than back down into another valley, than back up. So I definitely put them to the test.

Very happy with these. I plan on using them for about four more hikes, I will than buy another pair and start breaking them in on shorter hikes. That was the only thing I did wrong. I feel these boots need a good 50 miles to get them broke in and for your feet to get used to them. Therefore, if you are wanting to get on a five day or longer hike. Please try and at least put 50 miles on them before you take them out on a longer trip. Which that is the golden rule that is always taught with new boots, but I did not do that.

I would recommend these hiking boots to anyone looking for a quality pair at a good price.

This is my third pair! They last a long time, I just get them too stained up to wear to work after a while. I wear them daily and have not found a more comfortable hiking boot than these.

  3. I am a hiker/backpacker who consistantly abuses boots. I've owned Hi-Tecs, Asolos, and finally the Merrell Sawtooth. I love this boot. I've owned them for nearly a year and have used it in every season and every conceivable Midwest weather configuration; these boots have risen to the challenge. I will admit, I had my doubts initially. These boots took far LONGER to break in than any boot I have ever owned. But once they were broken in, they are incredibly comfortable no matter what mile I am on. I have not encountered the stitching issues or sole issues some other reviewers have had. I would (and I have) recommend this boot to others.

  5. I got these boots in Dec 2005 and still are going! I took them to the mountains in Afghanistan and Iraq and now just ware them for the comfort. They are beginning to break apart in the front because the glue is breaking down but I think some monkey glue should fix them up and keep them going for years to come.

  6. This is my 3rd pair of Merrell hiking boots in 10 years. I will not by any other brand of hiking boots, was sold on the brand from the first time I bought a pair. Well worth the money, and they last forever, very good quality and product. From the first pair I ever owned they have all felt like a slipper on my feet, their that comfortable. If your looking for a great product, with great quality, and comfort that can only be felt, because words cannot describe, then a pair of Merrell's is what you want.

  7. These boots are the boot of choice in Afghanistan. I put hundreds of miles on mine and no issues. Great fit and feeling and not one blister. I did wear them out but no other boot lasted as long. Looking for another pair but I am not sure Merrell makes them anymore. GREAT BOOT

  8. I purchased these boots for the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan. These boots are amazing for the price. Very comfortable. I did a 8 mile foot patrol the day after I received them and did not get a single blister. I did however, replace the insoles that are sold with them. The insoles that come with them are good, but feel "gel-like" and I needed something a lot stiffer for the extremely rocky terrain here. I purchased them about a month ago, and have put over 100 miles on them so far. They have held up very well with only one scratch (from constantine wire). Overall, wonderful boots, would definitely recommend to a friend, as well as, buy them again if I needed to.
